Issue Position: Calista's Law

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2012

A girl named Calista Springer died a tragic death on February 27th, 2008 from inhaling the smoke of the fire that was set in the Springer home, after Marsha Springer turned on the vacuum cleaner, which sparked the fire.

Tony and Marsha Springer got their other children Heather and Courtney out of the house, along with the pets but Calista was chained to her bed like an animal, when the fire dept reached her, she was found dead.

Tony and Marsha Springer were prosecuted for abuse, torture and murder, the jury convicted of abuse and torture but not of murder, when inadmissible evidence would have secured a murder conviction.

Calista's Law was written by Wendy Matthews and submitted by Representative Matt Lori (who represents the district where Calista Springer resided), this bill has not yet passed and it should.

I know some will ask why does this concern me when Calista lived outside of my district? well what if a child in my own district was being chained or tied to the bed? if I am elected State Representative, I owe it to the children of the state of Michigan, to make sure that they do not suffer the same way Calista suffered.

I also want to make clear that We The People will not tolerate chaining or tying children up at all.

I know some people will say "why do we need more laws due to the death of a child?" or "don't we already have laws to protect children?" and my answer to that is, yes there are laws out there designed to protect children, unfortunately in some states including the state of Michigan, there is absolutely no law against tying and chaining children to the bed like animals, and that is not right, it should be against the law to do this to innocent children.
